1. Western sun-sign date ranges
The calculator maps the Gregorian month and day to the conventional 12 tropical zodiac date ranges. It does not calculate an astronomical natal chart. Dates at or immediately beside a sign boundary receive a cusp note because exact solar ingress can vary by year, birth time, and location.
2. Chinese zodiac year boundaries
The default method converts the Gregorian date to the traditional lunisolar calendar for dates from January 31, 1900 through December 31, 2100. This correctly handles people born before Lunar New Year, who belong to the preceding animal year.
The optional Li Chun method changes the year at the Beginning of Spring, usually around February 4. We use an approximate calendar date for it. A birth close to the exact transition hour requires birth time, location, and specialist calculation.
Example: February 9, 2024 is still in the Rabbit year under the Lunar New Year method. February 10, 2024 begins the Dragon year.
3. Five Element and Yin-Yang year layer
The Chinese year belongs to a ten-year Heavenly Stem cycle. Consecutive pairs map to Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water; even years are treated as Yang and odd years as Yin in this year-level model. Together with the 12 animals, this forms the familiar 60-year cycle.
This is a year layer, not a full birth-chart reading, which would also need birth month, day, hour, and location.
4. The 144-combination editorial model
Each Western sign has structured attributes for element, energy style, polarity, pace, expression, stability, control, core drive, strengths, shadow behavior, communication, relationships, work, stress, and growth. Each Chinese animal has a parallel structured profile. The calculator uses these fields as the basis for every combination.
The five launch profiles are manually edited long-form interpretations. The remaining 139 pairings appear as quick previews built from that data; they receive full written pages only after editorial review.
5. Compatibility model
The compatibility calculator produces five dimensions and a weighted overall score. The result is symmetric: switching Person A and Person B does not change the scores.
Signals used
- Western elemental support: Fire–Air and Earth–Water patterns
- Western energy styles: initiating (Cardinal), steady (Fixed), and adaptable (Mutable)
- Traditional Chinese zodiac bonds (trines, harmonies) and tensions (clashes, harms)
- Five Element generating and controlling cycles
- Yin-Yang polarity
- Distance across pace, expression, stability, and control traits
Scores are intentionally bounded. No pairing receives 0 or 100 because a symbolic model cannot measure a human relationship with that certainty.
6. Limits and responsible use
Zodiac Weave is designed for entertainment, conversation, and self-reflection. It is not a scientific personality assessment, a prediction system, or professional advice. Culture, attachment, values, circumstances, and actual behavior matter more than any symbolic pairing.
